Wild Trout Trust shortlisted for UK River Prize

At the Wild Trout Trust, we’re very passionate about partnership working. We collaborate with organisations and groups all over the country, to make an even greater difference for nature. So we’re pleased to share that one of our joint projects has been shortlisted as a finalist for the UK River Prize.

This prestigious prize is awarded annually by the River Restoration Centre — a not-for-profit organisation that champions the natural and societal benefits of restoring river systems. Like us, the Centre focuses on undoing physical modifications that are damaging the health of UK rivers. Prize entrants are judged on how well they demonstrate innovation and best practice in river restoration and catchment management.

We’ve been shortlisted for our habitat enhancement efforts on the River Ecclesbourne in Derbyshire, along with our project partners Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Nestle Waters & Premium Beverages, the Chatsworth Estate, and the Environment Agency. This work opened up 28km of river, through the removal of two complete barriers to fish movement — Snake Lane weir and Postern Mill weir.

It’s a real honour to be among the finalists for this year’s UK River Prize, and we’re grateful to have been selected. This recognition is a testament to the fantastic work being done in the area by our Deputy Director Tim Jacklin, in collaboration with our project partners. We look forward to the winner being announced on 29 April!

Tim said of the news: This nomination is a brilliant acknowledgement of what can be achieved when passionate people and organisations work together for rivers. The removal of Snake Lane weir and restoration of the river around Postern Mill weir were real milestones for the River Ecclesbourne which will benefit the river and its wildlife for generations to come.”
