The 2024 Sportfish Spring Spectacular takes place online this weekend, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April, and all of us at WTT are looking forward to watching the première of a beautiful new film with our founder and Vice-President Charles Rangeley-Wilson as part of the festivities.

Shot and edited by Chalkstream FlyThe River Nar: A Chalkstream Restoration follows Charles’s three-year partnership project near Castle Acre in Norfolk involving local landowners (Holkham, West Acre and Narford estates) and Norfolk Rivers Trust — as well as Norfolk Rivers Drainage Board and Water Management Alliance, who co-funded the film with us.

The project was designed to reconnect the river to its surrounding landscape, and the film depicts Charles’s novel process of working out where to put the new meandering channel (spot the repurposed fly-line!) all the way through to final deliveries of large woody material with help from a heavy horse.

Today, this stretch of the Nar is back where it belongs in the floodplain’ as a much more natural and complex ecosystem, where wild trout of all sizes have already taken up residence in new habitat designed to cater for their full range of life stages. Norfolk Rivers Trust will be running a 5‑year monitoring programme to assess continued ecological recovery.
