River Kennet sewage: Protest rally 14 April

There will be a protest rally on Sunday 14 April at 12 noon in Victoria Park, Newbury. Action for the River Kennet, the Angling Trust (led by former local MP, Martin Salter) and the Kennet River Keepers are working together to focus public attention on the pollution scandal that is impacting chalk streams in this catchment. Wild Trout Trust staff plan to attend and give their support.

A main tributary of the Kennet, the River Lambourn, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and has suffered from particularly noxious sewage spills.

This protest is one of an increasing number of expressions of public frustration with the amount of sewage in our rivers and lack of any real action to address the issue. The recent report by the Environment Agency shows that, despite years of campaigning, the problem is getting worse not better. A 54% increase in sewage spills in 2023 versus 2024!
