Advisory Visits

The objective of the Wild Trout Trust Advisory service is to encourage and assist riparian owners, fishing clubs and community volunteer groups to instigate their own habitat restoration projects.

The Wild Trout Trust is dedicated to protecting and restoring wild trout habitats. Many people wish to carry out their own habitat improvement projects and we frequently get asked for advice. To meet these requests the WTT provides an Advisory Visit service.

Advisory Visits cover all types of brown and sea-trout habitat, including streams, rivers, lakes, lochs and loughs. We conduct visits all over the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

Each visit consists of two parts. A Wild Trout Trust advisor will undertake a site visit to make an initial survey of in-stream habitat conditions, channel details, and riparian conditions such as the bank profile, shading and sediment sources. Historic and present land usage in the flood plain and catchment is also considered, in order to help determine all the factors that may be causing habitat degradation.

Based on this survey, the advisor will prepare a report of his findings and makes recommendations on the practical steps that can be taken to improve the habitat for wild trout. The recommendations in the report are designed to promote ‘holistic’ management and rehabilitation techniques that deliver positive gains to local biodiversity as well promoting sustainable fisheries management. We will also include a copy of The Wild Trout Survival Guide, which will guide project leaders through the procedures of the entire process from planning to implementation.

The cost of this service is £350 per day plus VAT, where applicable, and expenses. However, thanks to funding from sponsors and conservation partners, and funds raised ourselves, the fee for a visit from one of our advisors is often waived, with only travel expenses and perhaps the cost of a pie and a pint at lunchtime falling to the club or owner.
