The Wild Trout Survival Guide |
|
The Wild Trout Survival Guide has been produced by the Wild Trout Trust in partnership with the Environment Agency.
Even in the remotest corners of the British Isles and Ireland our wild trout are under threat. Housing Estates, conifer plantations, intensive farming, municipal water supply, and a hundred other symptoms of progress damage the fragile landscape on which this emblematic fish depends – an array of problems that seems insurmountable. But start with the smallest of them; clear a dam to open up spawning grounds; fence livestock off the delicate riverbank; replace the gravel that zealous engineers removed. The Wild Trout Trust exists to help you do such things, and this guide is about knowing where to start. It is a shorter journey than you might think from making the trout in your local stream important again, to providing an example that will influence those with the responsibility to solve our landscapes bigger problems. We can all put our boots on and make a difference.
The guide is a 72-page, full colour, practical and inspirational manual on how to create ideal conditions for wild brown trout to flourish, and is illustrated throughout with specially commissioned drawings, designs and case studies. Aimed at those wishting to start their own wild trout conservation projects, it takes the reader from assessing their 'stretch of the water' all the way to project-design, planning, funding and dealing with red-tape. The emphasis throughout is on sustainable restoration and management, that will not only benefit wild trout populations but also deliver gains to local biodiversity.
